Keep in the know

I get asked a lot, “How do you keep up to date with everything?”  I normally reply by listing a string of things that I subscribe to and read like the 20+ blogs I read, a handful of wikis, news sites that have educational sections, my podcast list etc.

By the end of this most of the people I’m talking to have their eyes rolling back in their heads, give me strange looks or say words to the effect of “Yeah, well you mustn’t have much to do in your daily life with works, family, etc….”

It’s then that I let them in on the secret to mine and millions of others organsiational success…RSS. I get the content I want to come to me, rather than me having to go search for it.

RSS stands for ‘really simple syndication’.  Basically using a feed aggregator which can be software or a site like iGoogle, bloglines, feedburner, pageflakes (there are heaps) you can get all you blogs, news updates, podcasts to appear in the one place.  So instead of checking out 20+ websites to see if they are updated, you check your aggregator and it shows you the latest updates.  You then simply scan the updates and read the ones you want to. I scan my iGoogle pages a couple of times a week.

Really simple!!

Most websites have feeds available, all you need to do is look for the orange RSS icon, click on it to get the feed address and away you go.  The video below gives a very simple explanation.
